Dr. John Balk, assistant professor, materials science and engineering, has been selected as a recipient of the 2009 Provost Outstanding Teacher Award for non-tenured faculty on the UK campus.
Dr. Brad Davis, assistant professor, civil engineering, has been recognized by Chi Epsilon civil engineering honor society as the 2009 Outstanding Civil Engineering Faculty at the University of Kentucky; and for best overall paper for “Comparisons of Measured Modal Properties and Walking Accelerations With Analytical Predictions for a Slender Monumental Stair” at the ASCE Architectural Engineering National Conference, 2008.
Dr. M. Pinar Mengüç, professor, mechanical engineering and Dr. L. Scott Stephens, professor, mechanical engineering, have been named Engineering Alumni Professors for outstanding teaching and honors. They join Dr. Bruce Walcott, electrical and computer engineering, as the second and third Engineering Alumni Professors in the College of Engineering.
In addition to the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Dr. Kim Anderson, professor, chemical and materials engineering and Gill Eminent Scholar, recently received a NSF REU grant. This is unique to have IGERT and Research Experiences for Undergraduate programs in the same department directed by the same principal investigator.
As of March 31st, 2009, the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department has received more than $4 million research funds. This is a record-funding year for the department.
Dr. Rick Honaker, professor, chair and director of graduate studies, mining engineering, was awarded the 2009 Distinguished Service Award from the Coal & Energy Division of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration at the 2009 Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado.
Dr. Daniel Tao, professor, mining engineering, Dr. X. Jiang, (Ph.D. ME ’03), Dr. M. Fan, (Ph.D. ME ‘08) and Dr. Data Patil, research scientist, Center for Applied Energy, received the 2008 Stefanko Best Paper Award for the Coal & Energy Division of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration at the 2009 Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado for their paper “An Innovative Rotary Triboelectrostatic Separator for Fly Ash Purification.”
Dr. Suzanne Smith, Donald and Gertrude Lester Professor, mechanical engineering, Dr. Raymond LeBeau, assistant professor, mechanical engineering, Dr. T. Michael Seigler, assistant professor, mechanical engineering, Daniel Reasor, (ME ’06, ‘08), Dr. Jamey Jacob, former associate professor, mechanical engineering, Stephen Scarborough, ILC Dover and Dan Gleeson, ILC Dover, were recognized for “Testing of Compact Inflatable Wings for Small Autonomous Aircraft” with Best Paper of the 9th Gossamer Spacecraft Forum 2008 at the 49th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference AIAA 2008-2216
Dr. Suzanne Smith, Donald and Gertrude Lester Professor, mechanical engineering and Turner J. Harris, current graduate student, mechanical engineering, received Best Technical Presentation for vehicle design at the 34th AIAA Dayton Cincinnati Aerospace Science Symposium for “Optimizing Packed Space Configuration for Deployable Wing UAVs.”
Dr. Jingshan Li, assistant professor, electrical and computer engineering and the Center for Manufacturing has been selected to receive the IIE Transactions Best Application Paper Award – Design & Manufacturing for J. Li, D.E. Blumenfeld and S.P. Marin, “Production System Design for Quality Robustness,” IIE Transactions, vol. 40, pp. 162-176, 2008.
